PETA interested in sponsoring ‘Fishing Hurts’ rest stop in Virginia

As a way to boost revenue to help pay for the state’s 42 rest stops, the Virginia Department of Transportation has designed a new program that would allow companies and organizations to pay for sponsorship opportunities at the sites.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is headquartered in Norfolk, VA. The group has expressed interest in sponsoring the Troutville Safety Rest Area on Interstate 81 at mile marker 158. PETA suggests renaming it the “Fishing Hurts” Rest Area.

Pulin Modi, action team manager for PETA, told Land Line on Thursday, March 31, that sponsoring a safety rest area is a “good opportunity to raise awareness about animals and also support a project that’s needed in a particular community.”

Modi said he hasn’t heard anything back from VDOT yet about PETA’s letter asking for a reduced, nonprofit sponsorship rate, but he added the organization plans to submit a formal application to sponsor the Troutville rest stop.
