The 2010 Long Beach Island Surf Classic made it official Wednesday: Raymond Sullivan Jr. of Brant Beach and Richard Crosta of Beach Haven are $1,000 grand prize winners. Sullivan topped striped bass with a 56.44 entry and Crosta took bluefish with a 16.06-pounder. They both added $150 to their haul because they were the senior division champs.
Jennifer Solewski of Barnardsville had the heaviest bass at 42.88 and Patti Dalton of Tabernacle caught the heaviest blue at 13.31 to take $150 women’s awards. A complete list of winners appear on the tournament website and will be published in the Shep on Fishing column Saturday.
Surfcasters start to favor clam as bait for striped bass over bunker. Rob Lyman at Oceanside Bait and Tackle in Brighton Beach said he also uses Ava jigs with a teaser and small Needlefish as lures.
Bob Lubberman said the Miss Chris boats are running six and eight-hour trips when weather allows from the dock in Cape May. They are fishing The Rips off Cape May and in Delaware Bay for stripers. Lubberman said fishing was good until the chilly winds started to blow.
