Off the hook: Angler back on piers doing what he loves | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

When fishing for big red drum from the end of a pier, an angler is at the mercy of the fish more so than ever.

Fish either swim by and bite, or they don’t. You can’t exactly go hunting for them.

None of that is lost on Wayne Fowlkes. Neither is the value of the fellowship on a pier between catches.

For nearly 30 years, the Virginia Beach 67-year-old put pier fishing on the back burner so he could stay home and take care of his mother.

That job was made a little easier because his custom rod-building business was housed in a special garage built beside the house.
