There’s a storm brewing on North Carolina’s coast. Fuel costs, cheap imported seafood and the high cost of living and doing business have put a black cloud over the heads of many fishermen.

Compounding matters, federal and state fishery managers have been struggling to identify the best way to protect fish that fishermen like to catch and people like to eat. Sometimes debates over fishing regulations end up being a tug of war between conservation groups and fishermen, and decisions about managing fish are often overly influenced by politics instead of science. As a result, fish and fishing communities suffer.
