The bust of an illegal rockfish ring in southern Maryland has watermen wondering how the bust will impact the local industry.
According to court documents, the watermen and a seafood dealer are accused of buying and selling 600,000 pounds of rockfish or striped bass between 2003 and 2007. The fish, if sold legally, would have been worth between $3 and $7 million.
It’s the largest Chesapeake fish poaching case ever and one of the Chesapeake Bay’s leading fishery experts says it’s an important bust.
